Second Metamorphosis Series:
Five Oil Paintings on Masonite
Artist’s Statement by Jean MacFarland Altshuler

The Second Metamorphosis Series explores the juxtaposition of two distinct painting methods within a single piece. Each painting prominently features an enlarged image of a moth, modeled on actual specimens, set against a backdrop that mimics the look of an insect collection display. The idea is to contrast the clearly defined, controlled inner field featuring the moth with a more expansive, abstract outer field, suggesting a transition from order to a freer, more dynamic realm.

The moth is always centered within a recessed field, which is itself set into an outer field. This outer field extends and abstracts the colors and patterns of the moth, creating a sense of movement and transformation. This reflects the natural metamorphosis of moths from larvae to their adult forms, and their nocturnal flights towards sources of light.

I wanted to honor the transformation process of moths, as well as their nocturnal habits and attraction to light, often resulting in their demise. This can be seen as a metaphor for the human psyche's quest for knowledge and truth. The series is part of a larger project, Life&Extinction, conceived in 1993, which invites viewers to reflect on our role and choices in the universe. The moth paintings symbolize the belief in the transformation of form into energy, and the idea that death in our dimension is a transition to a higher plane.

By presenting these themes through the medium of oil painting on masonite, I aim to evoke a deeper reflection about existence, transformation, and the pursuit of enlightenment.
