Greg Robertson Biography

Granite is Greg Robertson's favorite rock when he is doing his sculpting. It is the varied color of the stone and its hardness that he finds so appealing. He gathers it from over thirty countries and in almost any color. Sometimes, the color will draw him first to begin his design. Or, the stone will display natural features that make the piece artistically strong. Robertson likes to explore the contrast between polish and rough, flat and carved.

Laminating pieces together to achieve a certain thickness gives Robertson aesthetic flexibility by allowing him to work with thinner pieces of granite.

A fourth generation native New Mexican, Greg Robertson received a BFA in Technical Theatre And Design from Eastern New Mexico University. He took a stint in London, England as a stage manager, then returned to New Mexico to work for the Shakespeare Company in Santa Fe. As a means to earn more money, he took on extra work for a local stone fabrication shop. During his five years of service there, his passion for sculpting stone began.

His sculpting continued in Pecos, New Mexico where he organized the Pecos Studio Tour. Recently, he returned to Santa Fe and can be found at his studio sculpting and playing the guitar.
